Abstract

On peut persuader (et se persuader) d'idées douteuses ou fausses par de mauvaises raisons ou par des théories non valides, ou encore parce que l'esprit est le dupe du cœur. Un troisième cas de figure apparaît comme négligé, malgré son importance, par ceux - moralistes, sociologues, philosophes ou psychologues - qui ont traité de l'art de (se) persuader. En effet, les croyances fausses peuvent aussi provenir des arguments les plus justes. Il suffit pour cela que se mêlent à une argumentation fondée des a priori auxquels on prend d'autant moins garde qu'ils peuvent plus facilement être considérés comme allant de soi. Bien des idées douteuses proviennent de théories irréprochables et, réciproquement, les idées reçues les plus fragiles s'appuient souvent sur une argumentation valide. Les exemples analysés ici sont empruntés à diverses sciences humaines, mais la philosophie et la sociologie des sciences modernes y occupent une place de choix.
